Chapter 1
- Gandalf the wizard asks Bilbo if he wants to go on an adventure and Bilbo refuses and goes inside his hobbit hole
- The next morning Bilbo hears a knock from his door and he thinks it is Gandalf but it is not him it is a dwarf, then more and more dwarves come and the last one to come is Thorin the leader and Gandalf
- The dwarves and Gandalf then propose an adventure to Bilbo to steal back the treasure that the dragon Smaug stole from Thorin's grandfather
- Towards the end of the night Bilbo wants to go on the adventure but when he is falling asleep, he is not sure

The Hero Cycle
Two parts of the hero cycle are covered in this chapter.
1. Call to an adventure - This happens when Gandalf asks Bilbo to take part in an adventure, which can be seen in the quotes above.
2. Refusal or acceptance of call - This happens when Bilbo tells Gandalf no at first, which can also be seen in the quotes above. Later on in the chapter, however, Bilbo is on the fence about going or not.
